How to Journal

First, read one chapter of scripture from a translation with which you are comfortable. Many of us at Crosswalk have been using The Message, a modern-day paraphrase of the Bible, by Eugene Peterson. Find at least one verse to either rewrite or write a thought about. Try to remember this verse throughout the day.

To add to your reading experience, pick up a revised version of "My Utmost For His Highest", by Oswald Chambers. Try to jot down one idea that sticks out to you.

To further your walk, write a love letter to God and one from Him to you. Consider writing these prayer letters in the back of your Journal working towards the front while your scripture journaling works towards the rear - you'll meet in the middle!

Try to capture six thoughts in your love letter to Him...

    • Thanksgiving
    • Praise & Worship
    • Confession (agreeing with God both in the negatives and positives)
    • Intercession (praying for others)
    • Requests
    • Hearing (ask Him questions)

Remember, what He says to you is far more important than what you say to Him.

In the love letter to Him ask at least three things.

    • Please help me to hear you
    • What do you love about me? (This is very important)
    • What can I do to enhance my friendship with you?

You'll find this much easier if you set aside a place and time daily to meet with Him. It is also a good idea to have some praise and worship music around before, during, and after.

Remember that this is about meeting with God, not a notebook and a Bible. If He isn't there, you haven't had a "Quiet Time", and it will seem boring and a waste of time. However, when He shows up, you'll find it anything but boring!
